Why did I choose to become a Virtual Assistant

What are my Whys?

This page will tell you more about my WHYs, how I chose to be in freelancing and what are my motivations in life as I go through my journey being a virtual assistant. You may also choose to write your comments below or share your experiences so we can also learn from each other.

My story

I am Olive and I am a full time working mom. I have two teenagers and I have been working for the past fourteen years as a call center employee. Working at night hasn't been easy, especially with the kids growing up. I had to teach them how to be independent as early as the age of seven. Before I go to work, we would spend time during dinner and make sure that they review our safety measures as I leave the house. I would constantly call them to check if they are okay or if they locked the door properly. It was tough, because we had no one to look after them when my father passed away. In the middle of the night, I can't check on them while they are asleep because they need to wake up early for school, hoping that nothing bad happened during the night. As I hurry back home from work, I always prayed that I will go home to see them unharmed.

This is my first Why - To have peace of mind knowing that I will be there with and for my children to support their needs while working as a virtual assistant.

Our future

Growing your career internally has its effect on your financial growth. I want to broaden my knowledge and expand the career opportunities outside that can help me with my financial stability. This is my second Why - I want to be able to provide for my family without thinking about how we will afford it.

The picture on the right was taken during our travel to Hongkong back in 2018 and I remember, we had to choose a cheap hotel and bring our own food to some of the places we visited, because we had a tight budget. I know the kids appreciated the travel and our time together, but as a parent, you would want to give them more. So, I promised myself that I will do my best to save up for future travels with them.

But, how will I do that if my salary can only cover so much?

Things we prioritize being the head of the family:

1. Tuition Fees (can be your kids, nieces and nephews, siblings, etc.)

2. Bills (Water, Electricity, Internet, etc.)

3. House Mortgage

4. Food allowance

5. Travel allowance

6. Insurance

7. Emergency Fund

8. Savings (if there's any amount left)

Thinking about how I have spent my last years just getting enough, made me realize I have to do something about it. Choose a career in freelancing (virtual assistant, creative design, project management) that will allow me to earn while being in the comforts of my home and enjoying time with my family. And today, I began my journey as a freelancer where I aim to provide the best-in-class service to my clients and partners and hopefully, they will be part of my journey in answering my WHYs.
